Actor Josh Brolin, 53, took to social media to share his joy as he celebrates 8 years of sobriety from alcohol. As those in recovery know, this is quite a big celebration. It takes courage to share your journey with the world and Brolin did so in a positive way showing how happy sobriety has made him and the positive affect it has had on his life and family.
Brolin is known for his role as supervillain Thanos in the Marvel Universe, and recently starred in Dune. The Instagram post shows a picture of a young Brolin years before his journey through sobriety started with uplifting words.
“Sobriety is finally loving without every thought being about how it affects only you. Sobriety is a moment of being able to love and be consumed by the glee it brings someone else. Sobriety is knowing the difference between selfishness and integrity,” Brolin began.

Brolin shared a fantastic look at what sobriety means to someone in recovery. It can be easy to look only at the negative and dwell on the past, when it’s important to cherish your support system and happy moments in recovery. He goes on in the post to show appreciation for his wife, Kathryn Boyd.
“Climbing in your truck for a 6am call after 8 years of sobriety and there being a card from your wife telling you how grateful she is for having made the decision to put it down,” Brolin continued in his post.
Brolin and Boyd have two young daughters, Westlyn and Chapel. Brolin also has two children from his previous marriage to Alice Adair, Trevor, 33 and Eden, 27. It is very clear his children are very important to him and motivate him to stay on the right path. He goes on in the post to share how important his children’s view of him is.
“Your children look at you and trust what they see (you can see it in their pupils, and the way they stand before you) — that they know they are not being cultivated into some idea but celebrated for the original garden they are growing into,” the Dune star went on to say.
Brolin sought out help in 2013 after several public outbursts. He knew it was time to take control of his life again and get the help he needed. Brolin had stated he knew he was heading in the wrong direction and needed to make changes for himself and his family.
In 2014, the actor spoke to The Guardian about why he decided it was time to go to rehab.
“It was another turning point,” Brolin told The Guardian. “It made me think of a lot of things. My mom dying when I was in my 20s. All the impact that had on me that I hadn’t moved past; I was always such a mama’s boy. But I realized that I was on a destructive path. I knew that I had to change and mature. It was like I stepped back and saw the hamster wheel.”

Brolin was born in Santa Monica, California in 1968. The son of actor James Brolin, Josh Brolin found success early on as a teenager acting as Brandon Walsh in The Goonies. This film went on to become successful in the box office and a classic still watched today.
Brolin went on to have a successful acting career, but turned to drugs and alcohol at a young age. He realized he had a problem as he dealt with issues like being arrested and ending his marriage to his second wife, Diane Lane.
After the success of The Goonies, his second film was not as big of a hit. Thrashin’, a 1986 skateboarding movie was a flop and left Brolin wondering what he would do next. Well, Brolin didn’t have to worry long as he moved into television. In 1989, Brolin starred in the television series, The Young Riders which was co-directed by his father.
Brolin went on to play supporting roles until 2007 when he co-starred in No Country for Old Men. He then continued to co-star in such films as Milk, True Grit, and Inherent Vice. Brolin is now popularly known for his role as Thanos in the Marvel Universe.
Sobriety looks good on Brolin. He continued on in the Instagram post to express how happy he is to be living sober and how it has benefitted his life.
“Sobriety is about living better than your remembrance of what your greatest drunk ever was — an everyday malleability into gratitude for what is. None of this is deserved. All of it is perception. Thank you, God, family, and friends, for the most punk rock sobriety imaginable.”
A week later, Brolin shared a photo of his young children and wife, a rarity for the Avengers star. Family is a huge motivation for Brolin to stay sober, and his career has taken off during his journey as well. Brolin continues to show gratitude and positivity on social media, an inspiration to those in recovery everywhere.
While Brolin is currently known for starring as Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he is currently starring in Dune which is playing in theaters.
