The Mental Health Substance Use Disorder Services (MHSUDS)

A division of DHCS, or the Department of Health Care Services, MHSUDS handles and combats substance abuse in California. Their services help people who are on Medicaid (Medi-Cal in California) find counseling, assessment, detox services, inpatient services, long term treatment and therapy, and aftercare sobriety maintenance. For more information, visit their website.

MHSUDS can help you find a inpatient substance abuse treatment facility or intensive outpatient addiction counseling program in California that accepts state and federally funded health insurance like Medicaid and Medi-Cal.

Drug Courts in California

California is known as a progressive state, implementing programs that focus on getting people help instead of on punishment. One program, the Drug Courts for Nonviolent Drug Offenders, is one such program. Offenders who are struggling with addiction can find sobriety and reduce future criminal activity if they get the substance abuse treatment they need.

Under this rule, offenders get a chance to attend inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment instead of incarceration. The program usually lasts about a year. The offender is subject to drug tests and frequent check-ins with the courts to monitor adherence to the program and measure success rates. Failure to remain sober and follow the policies closely can result in jail time.

Overdose Prevention in California

Often, when someone is overdosing or are with someone who is overdosing, they do not call 911 because they have drugs with them. They do not want to go to jail. This can have tragic consequences. The person overdosing could die. California has implemented the Good Samaritan Overdose Prevention Law in 2013. This essentially states that if someone is witnessing an overdose and has a small amount of drugs on them, they can call for help without worrying about getting arrested. This way, anyone overdosing can get the emergency help they need.

California Addiction Treatment Information & Support

When people think about California, they think of sunny beaches and movie stars. The real California has these things but so much more. The terrain can range from mountains, to beaches to desert. In some areas, someone can start the day swimming in the Pacific and be skiing in the mountains just a few hours later. California is known for its fresh produce, healthy lifestyle and casual vibe. With all of these things going for it, it is no wonder California is the most populous state in the United States.

While millions of people agree that California is a great place to live, it has its drawbacks as well…and we’re not just talking about earthquakes. No state is immune to drug addiction. An estimated 3 million Californians are addicted to drugs or alcohol. Drug abuse kills more people in California than car accidents, homicides, suicide or guns. Emergency room visits and medical care for drug overdose victims drain the economy of millions of dollars each year.

While these statistics seem bleak, California combats substance abuse and alcoholism like no other state in the union. More than 150,000 people a year seek drug addiction and alcoholism treatment in California each year. Many come from out of state to enjoy the healthy lifestyle and climate as they rebuild their lives. There are many programs in both southern and northern California that suit every need or budget. Many of the holistic therapies used in recovery today were first implemented in California, and the state remains on the cutting edge of treatment modalities and medical approaches to drug and alcohol addiction recovery
