At Ventura Recovery Center, our Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Program provides trauma-focused therapy to help clients heal from past experiences that may contribute to substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. EMDR is an evidence-based treatment proven to reduce the emotional intensity of traumatic memories, allowing clients to reframe these experiences and build a healthier future.
Led by licensed EMDR clinicians, our program integrates trauma-informed care with comprehensive addiction treatment. We work closely with clients to address the root causes of substance abuse, foster emotional regulation, and promote long-term recovery.
How EMDR Therapy Works
Our EMDR sessions help clients process distressing events and replace negative self-beliefs with adaptive, empowering perspectives. This may involve:
Identifying and targeting specific traumatic memories or limiting beliefs
Helping the brain “unstick” from past trauma and integrate new, healthier perspectives
Using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones) to assist reprocessing
Reducing symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, shame, and other emotional triggers linked to substance use
Program Goals
- Safely process unresolved trauma
- Reduce emotional reactivity and triggers
- Develop healthy coping mechanisms and self-beliefs
- Address the root causes of addiction
- Support lasting sobriety and emotional stability
Individualized Treatment Approach
EMDR is typically delivered in one-on-one sessions but may also be incorporated into group therapy through EMDR-informed education, grounding, and visualization techniques. Our clinicians adapt each session to match the client’s readiness and capacity for trauma work, ensuring a safe and supportive healing environment.
By integrating EMDR therapy with other modalities—such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based relapse prevention, and holistic wellness programs—we provide a comprehensive path to recovery that addresses both mind and body.
